Attendance Information

Group of CMS studentsA student’s academic success is directly tied to his/her attendance. Please do your best to ensure your child regularly attends school and consistently makes it to class on time and ready to learn.

Please report all absences to our attendance secretary, Holly Hannah, at (804) 723-2170. Upon return to school, students should bring a note from their parent or guardian stating the reason for their absence. Please also report any reasons for leaving early from school.

Full Day Absence

We will mark all absences as unexcused until a parent/guardian does one of the following within three school days of the absence:

  • Call the attendance line at (804) 723-2170 and leave a message to include your name, the student’s full name, spell the student’s name, and provide a reason for the absence.
  • Send in a note from a parent/guardian to provide a reason for the absence including: student name, date of absence, reason for absence, and parent signature.
  • Send medical or court documentation for absence.

If a student is absent for more than three consecutive days they need a doctor’s note for the absences or, if the absences are not medical related, they must be approved by the principal before the absence.

Late Arrival to School

A student who arrives after 8:45 a.m. is late.

  • Students coming from an appointment (medical or dental) or other excusable reason will sign in at the front office. We request the student to bring a note from the provider to excuse the absence. We will accept a note from the parent/guardian. The note should include the date, student’s full name, the excusable reason for late arrival, and the parent’s signature.
All transportation-related tardies that are not due to HCPS transportation service are unexcused. This includes car trouble, accidents, train delays, and late rides. Students who arrive by private transportation should allow extra time for bad traffic conditions or other problems. Other unexcused reasons for being late include oversleeping, completing school work, transporting family members, and providing care for siblings.

Early Dismissal from School

If an early dismissal is necessary, please do the following:

  • Students should bring a note from a parent/guardian to the front office before school to receive a pass for early dismissal. The note should include the following: student name, person’s name picking up student, time of pick-up, reason for dismissal, and parent/guardian signature.
    • Students must show their teacher the early dismissal pass when they arrive to class.
    • Quietly leave class at the time designated time on the pass.
    • Parents (or designated adults) are required to come into the school to sign students out and must show their ID.
    • Early dismissals should occur before 3:30 p.m. to avoid dismissal traffic.
